Back to You
AB
It’s so great to see how much ANZAC Day means to everyone.
As an educator, it was a privilege to help pass on those stories — some from my own family.
And that is why I wrote ‘Back to You’. A song that wonders what it might have felt like to come home after war — carrying the weight of all you’ve seen, unsure of what’s waiting.
So consider the lyrics. Have a listen. Maybe even share it.
This one’s for them.
For then.
For now.

'Back to You'
An orange streaky daybreak
On a very solemn day
The road’s been blocked for hours
My daydreams get in the way
I’ll be there by 19:30
Not sure what they want to see
I hope I’ll live up to all they think I’ll be
There’s an unexpected silence
As we pull into Bromley Street
I see the sidewalks overgrown
As I struggle to my feet
I hear a sweet voice quiver
Call an old forgotten name
I hide my empty eyes
Ignore the pain
So when you see the sunrise
On a chilly April day
Remember what I told you
And what they tried to take away
Don’t want to be no hero
I’m just a kid who can’t forget
The one thing I knew
I’d find my way
Back To you
Hello cousin Charlie
Gee how you’ve grown
And cheeky little Sally
A little girl of your own!
I’m sorry but Uncle Jimmy
Won’t be joining us today
He’s not far away
Let’s scream the songs he’d play
There were times I wish I’d let go
Of everything I knew
But I clung onto the pain and fear
If it meant forgetting you
There were times I’d think I’d see you
In the shadows of the day
I played their games so I’d
Find my way to you
So when you see the sunrise
On a chilly April day
Remember what I told you
And what they tried to take away
Don’t want to be no hero
I’m just a kid who can’t forget
The one thing I knew
I’d find my way
Back To You
